The Best of 2009 So Far #1

June 16th, 2009 Caleb No comments

A short time ago, the good fellas over at the All Songs Considered Blog asked the question of what was the best music of the year so far?   I agree with them that this has been a great year for music, much better than 2008, and I’d like to share some of my favorite albums of the year with you.

I’d like to do this a little differently than some other blogs, so instead of giving you a "Top Five" or something artificial like that, I’m going to do this as a series of posts and I’m going to give you a short burst about every 2009 album I’ve listened to.  This way, these posts can grow organically over time as new music is released.  My hope is that you’ll get turned on to some new music.  I hope that’s agreeable to you…

A.C. Newman “Get Guilty”

Get GuiltyI didn’t discover The New Pornographers until 2007’s Challengers.  For those of you that don’t know, I didn’t discover indie rock until 2007, having been lost in a haze of folk and alt-country for about 10 years.  Hence, even today, there are many classic albums and great musicians that I still haven’t heard yet.

But I digress, back to Challengers.  I listened to it the first time and it really didn’t seem like anything special.  I listened to it 2 more times after that and still no grand euphoria.  So I figuratively put the album up on the shelf and forgot about it.  One day later I decided to giveChallengers one last chance as I parked my car at the airport.  I kept it rolling as I entered the airport, waited for my flight, and boarded.  It was pure power pop bliss (And if you don’t know what "power pop" is, I suggest you purchase a copy of Challengers right frickin’ now and figure it out).
